NGO helps underserved communities flourish with batik
23 December 2021

THE inaugural batik collection by local non-governmental organisation Dignity for Children Foundation (Dignity) received an added boost with the declaration of Dec 3 as Malaysia Batik Day by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

The collection titled “Flourishing Dignity” is designed by the creative team of Dignity’s transformational enterprise, sew X dignity.

The designs are then stamped and dyed by local artisans in Kuala Lumpur, and sewn by its in-house tailors comprising refugees and women in the B40 group.

Dignity’s Enterprises head Natalie Tan said: “This batik collection serves as a visual symbol of how students at Dignity are given the opportunity to grow, flourish and be empowered regardless of their circumstances or country of origin.

“It also underscores the diversity and beauty of the Dignity community.”

Sticking to the tradition of batik patterns and motifs, the collection drew inspiration from the national flowers of its students who hailed from different countries.

The first flower featured is the jasmine, the national flower of Pakistan. It connotes modesty and purity.

The motif can be found on a variety of household items — coasters, pot holder, apron, cushion covers, tissue cover, table runner, place mats and children’s bunting.

The items are available in a variety of colours — golden yellow, moss green, cherry red and ocean green.

The collection will add a dash of colour to your dining table and kitchen, besides helping a section of Malaysia’s refugee community and B40s to flourish with dignity.

Proceeds from the sales will go towards giving more children the opportunity to receive better quality education at Dignity.
