Rokiya's Journey of Transformation and Empowerment Amidst the Pandemic
19 May 2023

It was a 'never-say-die' attitude that propelled 75 underprivileged children, including refugees and those from broken families, towards academic success. Over the course of two years druing the pandemic, these young learners xperienced 35 weeks of school closures, prolonged periods of income loss, and more.  Yet, against all odds, they persevered, ready to celebrate their achievements at the 'Class of 2021' graduation ceremony held at Dignity for Children Foundation's premises in Sentul Boulevard.

Journey of Empowerment

Among them stands Rokiya, an 18-year-old Myanmar refugee, who has triumphed over adversity and proven the transformative power of education. Rokiya's story is a testament to the impact of 'Empower-A-Child' program, which has brought positive change to the lives of many children like her.

Rokiya, like many others, had to adapt to online learning while grappling with financial hardships, job losses, and the fear of COVID-19. However, amidst these uncertainties, Rokiya found solace in the unwavering support of her teachers and the school's efforts to provide essential resources.
"Our teachers were patient in encouraging us and the school provided mobile devices and phone credits to support our learning," Rokiya recalls.

As the challenges continued into the following year, Rokiya faced the additional hurdle of securing internships amidst the economic downturn. She also encountered health issues that forced her to pause her internship temporarily. Yet, driven by her determination to support her family and complete her studies, Rokiya refused to give up.

She counts herself fortunate for being given an opportunity to intern at Eat X Dignity, an experience that eventually led to a full-time position. Through it all, Rokiya has come to appreciate Dignity for Children not only for the education it offers but also for building character.

"We truly value Dignity to offer not only education, but also building our character, training us to be resilient and persevere in everything we do," Rokiya reflects.

Supporting the Community

In addition to empowering students academically, Dignity for Children Foundation has gone above and beyond to support the wider community. During these challenging times, when many struggled to make ends meet, Dignity distributed 5,712 packs of food and sanitary products to deserving students, marginalized communities, and B40 staff. This initiative not only provided essential supplies but also served as a beacon of hope, reminding individuals that they are not alone in their struggles.
