They are painful and they are real. For poor urban children, the daily struggles of living are without relief, without end. For Vincent, the end nonetheless came. He died at 28 of drug abuse. A life snuffed out. A life which could have been so different had someone cared, had someone intervened.

He was not lazy or stupid and he certainly did not deserve to die. He simply did not have the opportunity to live! Children trapped in poverty rarely have any options, any means of escaping unless someone intervenes. Poverty forces them to live with a hopelessness so devastating that the human spirit fails.

Consider Luke, Vincent’s nephew. Born into abject poverty, he too was set to fail in life no matter how hard he tried. Yet today at 23, he stands tall as the breadwinner and trail blazer for his family. After 12 years of holistic care and quality education at Dignity for Children Foundation, he went on to earn a diploma in electrical and electronics. 1 of his sisters is studying for a diploma in International Montessori Pedagogy whilst another will soon enter tertiary education. Someone cared, someone intervened and a family walked out of poverty!
